Sungji Hong Commissioned for the 2027 Primrose International Viola Competition
Composer Sungji Hong has been commissioned to write a new work for solo viola for the 2027 Primrose International Viola Competition, organized by the American Viola Society.
The composition will be featured in the Quarter-Final Round of the competition. The Illumination Prize will be awarded for the best performance of Hong’s newly commissioned work, as determined by the competition jury. All rounds of the competition will be open to the public and held at the Colburn School in Los Angeles, California.

Performance of Shine
On October 14, 2026, Pia Hauser will perform Shine for flute and electronics at the Westphalian State Museum of Art and Cultural History in Münster, Germany. In her performance, Hauser juxtaposes international compositions with artworks from the LWL Museum’s collection, celebrating light. A central highlight is the world premiere of “DARKFLUTE” by the contemporary Münster-based composer Ulrich Schultheiss. The work will be heard for the first time during the “Wandelkonzert” and musically interprets darkness. The highlight will be the work “SHINE” by South Korean composer Sungji Hong, performed in the museum’s newly created Gerhard Richter Hall.

Honorable Mention for the Walter Beeler Memorial Composition Prize
Sungji Hong’s Silence, an oboe concerto for wind ensemble, was selected as a finalist with honorable mention for the Walter Beeler Memorial Composition Prize.
This cycle received approximately 280 compositions from 250 composers. The submitted works were reviewed by a panel of 32 adjudicators through multiple rounds of blind committee consideration.
The first prize was awarded to James Stephenson for his Symphony No. 5. Silence was recognized among several distinguished works receiving honorable mention, alongside Declaration by James Stephenson, Symphony No. 1 “Confluence” by Franco Cesarini, and Quadrants de Rêves by Andrew Strawn.

On June 20, 2026, Trio Contique will perform Missa Lumen de Lumine during their debut Solstice Concert at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Portland, Oregon. The program will feature Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, and Agnus Dei from the work.
Trio Contique — mezzo-soprano Sarah Beaty, soprano Henriët Fourie, and soprano Vakarė Petroliūnaitė — makes its Portland debut on the longest day of the year. The program features a cappella works by Caroline Shaw, Sungji Hong, David Lang, Andrew Smith, and Drago, alongside folk songs rooted in ancient traditions of song and storytelling.
